Considered a prominent figure of the Enlightenment, Isaac Newton was a natural philosopher whose research ranged from alchemy and physics to mathematics and optics. The son of a farmer who died before Isaac’s birth, he was raised by his maternal grandmother after his mother remarried.

Despite an unsettled early education, Newton found some stability attending The King’s School in Grantham, though his teachers noted his lack of interest in schoolwork. His twice-widowed mother tried to remove him from school to tend the farm. Newton failed spectacularly at farming, so he returned to finish his studies — this time with the goal of becoming a top student to avoid returning to farm life.

Recognising his academic abilities, his uncle convinced Newton to enrol at the University of Cambridge in 1661. During this period, the Scientific Revolution had already reached university classrooms, and the work of contemporary philosophers like René Descartes and astronomers like Galileo was being discussed more than the timeless teachings of Aristotle or Socrates. This modern view of physical reality captured Newton’s attention, and he began writing notes entitled Quaestiones Quaedam Philosophicae (Some Philosophical Questions), touching on topics in natural philosophy and mathematical theory. Newton’s interest in modern thought somewhat slowed his general studies, and he graduated in 1665 as an undistinguished student without honours.

Shortly after graduating, the university closed due to the plague, forcing Newton to return home and work on his theories of optics, calculus and physics in isolation. When the university reopened, Newton returned to Cambridge to obtain his master’s degree and become a professor of mathematics.

Newton spent much of his life developing his most celebrated scientific theories, including the creation of modern calculus, the explanation of universal gravitation, and the formulation of his laws of motion (listed below). These conclusions were documented in two of his most prominent published works: Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica and Opticks.

Newton eventually left Cambridge and moved to London to pursue political ambitions, accepting a post as Warden of the Royal Mint. In 1703, Newton was elected President of the Royal Society, a title he held until his death. He developed an interest in theology and wrote several works interpreting the Bible. The rest of his life was spent in London, where he defended his scientific work and challenged rivals who criticised his findings — a jealous streak in his character for which he was known throughout his life.

In 1727, Newton died at the age of 84 at his home in Kensington, London, and was buried with great ceremony in Westminster Abbey. He was the first scientist to be buried in a historic church, and his tomb stands opposite the choir screen, near the monument erected in his honour in 1731.

Isaac Newton’s contributions to eye care

Fascinated by theories of light and optics, in 1672 Newton began experimenting with how the eye perceives light, which ultimately culminated in his celebrated book Opticks, published in 1704. Here is a summary of Newton’s key findings on vision:

Using a prism, Newton discovered that individual light rays refract at different angles, resulting in the separation of colours. Newton applied this discovery to how the human eye interprets the light spectrum

To test his theory, Newton inserted a blunt needle into the space between his eye and eye socket and pressed it, which resulted in seeing spots or flashing lights (the same effect you get when you press on your eyes with your fingers)

Newton assumed that light was composed entirely of particles, which is incorrect (it is a wave of photons) — a theory later disproved by Thomas Young

Newton’s needle experiment led him to realise that we see ‘upside down’, processing inverted images using the convex shape of the eye’s lens

Other notable achievements of Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton’s impact on science is incalculable, and his name is recognised worldwide alongside other great scientific figures such as Einstein, Galileo and Darwin. Among his most celebrated achievements:

The discovery of the law of gravity and the theory of universal gravitation. He argued that all particles of mass in the universe attract other particles — which helped explain the orbit of planets and the moon’s influence on Earth’s tides

Newton’s three laws of motion:

First Law: Law of Inertia — an object at rest tends to stay at rest; an object in motion continues at a constant speed in a straight line unless acted upon by a force

Second Law: Law of Acceleration — force equals mass times acceleration (F = ma)

Third Law: Law of Action and Reaction — for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction

He is credited with inventing modern calculus, a branch of mathematics dealing with rates of continuous change

He invented the reflecting telescope, which uses mirrors to reflect light and produce a sharper image — an improvement on the refracting telescopes of the time

As Warden of the Royal Mint, Newton redesigned British coins to prevent counterfeiting, and invented minting techniques still used today

He proposed Newton’s Law of Cooling, which states that the rate of heat loss from an object is proportional to the difference in temperature between the object and its surroundings

He was Member of Parliament for Cambridge from 1689 to 1701

Elected President of the Royal Society from 1703 to 1727

In 1705, he became the first scientist to be awarded a knighthood

Final thoughts

Considered one of the most prominent scientists the world has ever known, Isaac Newton’s studies ranged widely — from calculus to cat flaps and colour spectra. While his experiments on sight and vision are a less well-known aspect of his career, they were essential in uncovering how the eye interprets colour and images.

Although his corpuscular theory — that light was not a wave — was later disproved by Thomas Young and Augustin Fresnel, his book Opticks was a cornerstone from which future scientists and opticians could build their own theories.

Sir Isaac Newton – (1642 ‑ 1727) Isaac Newton was born in Lincolnshire, England, on […]

[2

post-94","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-curiosity-and-fun
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
