Born in Marburg, Germany, in 1852, Fick had an unfortunate start in life as both of his parents died before his sixth birthday. Following the deaths of his mother and father, he was raised by his uncle \u2014 who shared his name, Adolf Eugen Fick \u2014 a respected physician, physiologist and cardiologist of the time.<\/p>\n<p>Under his uncle&#8217;s guidance, Adolf Fick (the nephew) chose to study medicine and anatomy in Germany and Switzerland, obtaining his doctorate in 1875. Fick then emigrated to South Africa, where he opened and worked in a medical practice for seven years. Longing for home, he returned to Germany in 1886 and married Marie Wislicenus, daughter of the well-known chemist Johannes Wislicenus. The couple moved to Switzerland, where Fick worked as a private physician and professor at the University of Zurich from 1887 to 1914.<\/p>\n<p>Following the outbreak of the First World War, Fick volunteered to work on the front lines in hospitals across Europe, while continuing to advance his studies in ophthalmology and vision. In 1937, Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick passed away peacefully at the age of 84.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-larger-font-size\">Adolf Fick&#8217;s contributions to eye care<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 1888, Adolf Fick built his first scleral lens model by creating a shell-shaped lens made of blown glass to correct refractive errors<\/li>\n<li>He carried out trials with the first contact lens design by placing it on the less sensitive tissue surrounding the cornea \u2014 first on rabbits, then on himself, and finally on a group of willing colleagues<\/li>\n<li>Fick published his findings under the title &#8216;Contactbrille&#8217; in a well-known medical journal, describing the first clinical use of contact lenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h3>\n<p>Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick is considered the inventor of the first true contact lenses.
