Wearing contact lenses<\/a> for the first time can be a real worry for some people who are scared of touching their eyes. It’s undoubtedly a good instinct: through our fingers, we can introduce bacteria, dust, and dirt that can cause irritation or infection. However, it is possible to overcome this fear and successfully wear contact lenses.<\/p>\n

If touching your eyes to put in your lenses makes you nervous, follow these helpful tips and \u2014 with a little patience \u2014 it’ll feel as easy as tying your shoelaces.<\/p>\n

See a specialist<\/strong><\/h2>\n

First things first \u2014 visit your optometrist to get a contact lens prescription. (Yes, a glasses prescription is different from a contact lens prescription.)<\/p>\n

Once you have the right prescription to order your lenses<\/a>, you can ask for advice on which lenses are right for you and a demonstration on how to fit them correctly \u2014 all while building your confidence.<\/p>\n

Don’t believe the myths<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While some people seem to have a genuine phobia of touching their eyes, others are put off by stories they’ve heard. Many of these are simply myths.<\/p>\n

One classic myth worth dispelling is the fear that a lens can get lost inside your eye. Absolutely not true! It’s practically impossible for a lens to end up behind your eye given the eye’s anatomical complexity. The eye is covered by a membrane connected to the inside of the eyelid, which prevents any foreign body \u2014 including contact lenses \u2014 from getting in.<\/p>\n

Practise<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Get used to touching your eyes by practising for a few days before buying your lenses. Not only will you feel more confident, but your eyes will start to desensitise to objects coming close to them.<\/p>\n

Once you’ve washed your hands thoroughly, bring the tip of your finger towards your eye. Use the index finger and thumb of your other hand to keep the eye open, just as you would with a real lens. After practising a few times, you should feel more comfortable.<\/p>\n

Try not to blink<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The natural reflex is to blink when an object approaches your eye. You might wonder how it’s even possible not to blink. Well, we can train ourselves not to blink when inserting a lens. Here’s how:<\/p>\n

Place your index finger on your upper eyelid and your thumb on your lower lid. With your other hand, pretend to insert the lens. Make sure the hand holding the eyelid open stays still. By doing this, your mind and your eyes will get used to the movement.<\/p>\n

Look away<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Never look at your finger as it approaches your eye.<\/p>\n

Instead, look in the mirror and, as soon as your index finger is ready to insert the lens, look upward towards the ceiling. Place the lens on the white part of your eye. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t settle immediately \u2014 simply close your eye and roll it in different directions to move the lens into position.<\/p>\n
